Get the in-demand skills you need to excel in greenhouse operations. This microcredential combines 30 hours of hands-on training with 30 hours of practical theory, helping you understand the structural components and functions of greenhouses.
You’ll develop essential skills in plant propagation, irrigation design, pest management, nutrient management, safety, and proper plant care. Through case studies, you’ll also learn how to evaluate the viability of greenhouse operations and make informed business decisions. The program also incorporates virtual simulations to deepen your understanding.

This microcredential has three modules:
- Greenhouse Theory (15 hours): Understand different greenhouse types, their structural components, and their functions.
- Plant Propagation (30 hours): Get hands-on experience in a local greenhouse, practicing plant care, propagation, and workplace safety.
- Greenhouse Operations (15 hours): Learn to evaluate greenhouse operations and make informed logistical decisions.
The Greenhouse Practices and Operational Fundamentals microcredential is ideal for individuals with a range of experience levels—from those new to greenhouse work to those with hands-on experience in farming. It’s also suited for someone in a management position who may not be directly involved with growing but will be managing growers and making business decisions.
This program was developed in consultation with Indigenous communities to address the unique needs and priorities of local food sovereignty and reclamation initiatives. It is perfect for Indigenous peoples and others interested in greenhouse operations, particularly those passionate about sustainable food systems and community-driven agriculture.
Prepare for roles in sustainable agriculture and greenhouse operations, including Greenhouse Technician, Food Security Coordinator, and Head Grower. Graduates can also pursue opportunities in community agriculture and reclamation projects, contributing to food security and sustainable food systems.
- Grade 10 completion.
- At least three years of work or volunteer experience in any sector, which can be non-consecutive and completed in Canada or abroad.
- Physically able to stand for at least three hours and lift up to 15 kg.
- An interest in plant propagation, care, and learning basic business skills for greenhouse operations.
- Proficiency in English (minimum of CLB 6)
These microcredentials are part of the Upskilling for the Innovation Economy project, delivered by Colleges and Institutes Canada. By addressing critical skills gaps, they aim to strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises and provide rapid pathways to employment, supporting economic growth for Canada. For a limited time, tuition is funded by Upskill Canada, powered by Palette Skills, and the Government of Canada, so you’ll only need to pay a small program fee of $200 once accepted.
