Get the in-demand skills you need to excel in greenhouse operations. This microcredential includes 30 hours of practical theory to help you understand the structural components and functions of greenhouses, plus an optional practicum for applied experience.
You’ll develop essential skills in plant propagation, irrigation design, pest management, nutrient management, safety, and proper plant care. Through case studies, you’ll also learn how to evaluate the viability of greenhouse operations and make informed business decisions.
Program details:
This microcredential has two badges and an optional practicum at an additional cost. You must complete both badges to be eligible for the practicum, and separate registration is required for this component. Additional practicum details will be provided once the badges are completed.
- Badge 1 - Greenhouse Theory (15 hours): Understand different greenhouse types, their structural components, and their functions.
- Badge 2 - Greenhouse Operations (15 hours): Learn to evaluate greenhouse operations and make informed logistical decisions.
- Badge 3 - Plant Propagation (20 hours): Optional Practicum (currently not available). Get hands-on experience in a local greenhouse, practicing plant care, propagation, and workplace safety.
The Greenhouse Practices and Operational Fundamentals microcredential is ideal for individuals with a range of experience levels—from those new to greenhouse work to those with hands-on experience in farming. It’s also suited for someone in a management position who may not be directly involved with growing but will be managing growers and making business decisions.
This program was developed in consultation with Indigenous communities to address the unique needs and priorities of local food sovereignty and reclamation initiatives. It is perfect for Indigenous peoples and others interested in greenhouse operations, particularly those passionate about sustainable food systems and community-driven agriculture.
Prepare for roles in sustainable agriculture and greenhouse operations, including Greenhouse Technician, Food Security Coordinator, and Head Grower. Graduates can also pursue opportunities in community agriculture and reclamation projects, contributing to food security and sustainable food systems.
- Grade 10 completion.
- At least three years of work or volunteer experience in any sector, which can be non-consecutive and completed in Canada or abroad.
- Physically able to stand for at least three hours and lift up to 15 kg.
- An interest in plant propagation, care, and learning basic business skills for greenhouse operations.
- Proficiency in English (minimum of CLB 6)
